HP LaserJet 1020 on a MacBook

If you own a MacBook (or any MacIntel unit) AND an HP LaserJet 1020 printer, then this blog entry is for you! Like most smart buyers, when I saw the $100+ price tag of the HP LaserJet 1020, I immediately bought one. Only when I installed the printer did I realize that the LaserJet 1020 was designed to work only with Windows! Bummer! I got the 1020 because of the low price and tiny footprint. However, before repackaging the printer for return, I googled “mac os x laserjet 1020″. I got a few hits back and read through them. It seemed that downloading the HP LaserJet 1022 drivers will make
the 1020 work with my MacBook. So I tried that, but the 1020 still won’t print. I went back on Google and found a tip on downloading an older version driver.
To Install HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OSX.
- Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version)
- If you have anything for the HP 1020 in “/Library/Reciepts” delete it.
- Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in “Printer Setup Utility”
- Add new printer in “Printer Setup Utility”, select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD
But the above procedure did not work for my MacBook setup! It did work for an older iBook — the LaserJet 1020 worked on my 14″ iBook G4 — but not on my MacBook.
Long story short, I did the following and got the LaserJet 1020 to print to my MacBook!
- I installed the driver from here: http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg
- On my MacBook, I added the printer (USB connection, MacBook found printer) but the driver could NOT be found automatically. I tried adding manually, but the 1020 is not listed as an option.
- Then, on my iBook, I shared the LaserJet 1020.
- From my MacBook, I connected to the shared LaserJet 1020.
- I sent one page for printing through the shared setup — the 1020 did print the page.
- Then I went back to my MacBook and tried adding the 1020. The MacBook found the USB connection AND automatically chose the correct driver!
I’m now a happy owner of a working MacBook-to-LaserJet 1020 printing setup.
Hope this helps!
