SplashBlog
At PETC-2, I noticed that about 10 attendees and presenters had TREOs with them. In case any of you TREO-natics are reading this, I’d like to bring your attention to SplashBlog. In case you haven’t come across this service before, it’s something very much worth getting into, especially if you have a TREO.
SplashBlog is a photoblog service — but since it interfaces very well with TREOs, other Palm OS devices and a bunch of other SmartPhones, it turns out to be really much more that that. They offer a FREE account where you can upload up to 500 pics. Beyond that, you have to pay $29.95 per year for UNLIMITED uploads. TREO-less? You can also upload photos through any WiFi-enabled Palm devices or through a web browser on a desktop/laptop computer (limited to 5 uploads at a time through this option). I use my T|X or my TH-55 or UX-50 for the uploading task. One nice thing about using CLIEs – I can take photos and upload via WiFi at once!

The photos you upload can be your personal ones. You can create separate blogs (which means differentl URLs) for personal and school-based photos blogs.
Educational applications of SplashBlog? I started using SplashBlog with my students in a “15 Things” project.
- Students are given a list of 15 vocabulary words from their Language Arts teacher.
- They come to me to check out a digital camera.
- They go around campus to take photos of people and things that best represent the words in their list.
- I walk them through the upload process on the handheld.
- They go on the web and enter their words in the title line of the photo entries and they write complete sentences using the words in their list in the caption line of the photos.
- You can check out a sample here: http://splashblog.com/stjohns2012/?albumid=8437
Other educational uses of SplashBlog:
- take photos of notes in meetings and post to your SplashBlog for later viewing
- take photos of activities/incidents in school and post
- keep a photoblog of an ongoing project
- take photos of items that need immediate attention in the school grounds — such as things that need to be repaire
Anyhow, if you don’t use this with your students, it’s still a great tool for your professional and/or personal development.
